Christine Todd Whitman, (1946- ), a Republican from
Somerset County, is the first woman to be elected to the governorship of New Jersey. In
this flyer from her successful 1993 election campaign, she sets forth her position on
educational spending and takes her opponent, incumbent governor James Florio, to task for
his fiscal policies.
Whitman was elected to a second term in
1997. She resigned as governor in January 2001 to become
Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency under
President George W. Bush, a position she held until 2003.
