New Directions for Women began as a mimeographed newsletter in 1972,
but it quickly became a tabloid-size quarterly newspaper, and the first feminist newspaper
in the state and nation. Edited by Paula Kassell of Dover, a member of the Morristown
chapter of The National Organization for Women (NOW), the paper filled a need for
no-nonsense reportage from a feminist perspective. At a time when women's issues were not
regularly or fairly covered in the mainstream press, it ran state, national, and international
news stories, book reviews, women's history articles, and editorials.
