One substantive result of women serving
in government is that they often encourage and appoint other women to
serve as well. Representative Millicent Fenwick was especially
effective in this respect because of her high profile in the popular
media. Fenwick is pictured here, in 1982, with a student intern
in her office. Fenwick served in the U.S. Congress from 1974 to
1982. The pipe-smoking grandmother so captured the public imagination
that she served as the model for Lacey Davenport, a character in the
nationally syndicated satirical cartoon strip entitled, "Doonesbury".
