Internationally-renowned artist Grace Hartigan
has been active
in the visual arts since the 1950s as a painter and printmaker.
Born in Newark and raised in Millburn, she signed her early work with the name George
Hartigan in order to find gallery representation and avoid sexism, as few women artists were able
to show their works in the 1950s. Hartigan worked in the Abstract
Expressionist genre and has continued to work in a variety of styles,
including Pop Art. She knew many influential contemporary writers, among
them the poet Frank O’Hara, who dedicated several poems to her.
She currently teaches at the Maryland Institute, College of Art.
