Courtesy, Newark Public Library

New Jersey women served in the Armed Forces during World War II in a variety of non-combatant roles. The women in this photo, members of the Women's Army Corps stationed at Fort Hancock, NJ, are taking stock inventory in the Fort Hancock motor pool building. The woman at the lower left is PFC Joanna M. Walowry - Whitehead of Irvington. She also served in the South Pacific and was awarded two bronze stars.  Thirteen female physicians served in the Army, among them Dr. Jessie D. Read (1903 -1978) of Westfield.
