Sarah Vaughan (1924-1990)

At an early age, Sarah Vaughan began taking piano and organ lessons. By the time she was
twelve years old, she was singing in the choir and playing the
organ at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Vaughan attended the Arts High
School in Newark. In 1942 she won the Apollo Theater amateur-night
contest. She went on to become a world famous jazz singer and
pianist. In 1989 Vaughan received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement
Award. In 1990 she was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame.
