Marion Hankins stands in front of a restored World War II plane, a TBM Avenger. During World War II, Hankins was part of a riveting team
that helped build these airplanes. Women were indispensable to the war effort,
including more than six million women who entered the labor force,
hundreds of Army and Navy nurses who served under combat conditions worldwide and
some two thousand pilots who flew various types of military aircraft in the
Women's Air Service Pilots and the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron.
