Alberta Gonzalez migrated to Mullica Hill, NJ, from Puerto Rico in
1950. In 1954, with the goal of improving the life of migrant farm workers, she became
the first Puerto Rican woman to supervise a labor camp for migrants in New Jersey. In
addition to her advocacy for improved working and living conditions for workers, she
worked as a cook for migrant workers for 34 years.
