Entire families lived and worked on the shipping boats that plied the Morris Canal between Phillipsburg and Jersey City after the canal was opened as a major commercial route in the 1830s. In this illustration that appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in 1885, the wife is shown at the tiller of a canal boat while her husband tends the smallest child. Well-dressed tourists pass by in a pleasure boat and stare.
